Intestinal parasites: Who are they?

Although there are several intestinal parasites already reported in pigs, some of them are more common than others.

Also, although some pig intestinal parasites have zoonotic potential, (i.e., have the capacity to be transmitted to humans), children, elderly, and immunocompromised people are at higher risk of getting sick in comparison to the rest of the population.

The most common pig intestinal parasites are Ascaris suum, Trichuris sp., strongyles, and coccidia (Cystoisospora suis and Eimeria sp.). Usually the over the counter anti-parasitics are effective to prevent and control infections, but caution should be taken because resistance against some of the anti-parasitic drugs has already been reported. Also, if you need to control coccidia, there is only one group of drugs that is effective against them.

Our fact sheet about the pig intestinal parasites, how to control potential infection, and how to prevent transmission to humans and to other healthy pigs is on its way! Stay tuned to read more!
